Nokia 7 Plus (The Budget-Pixel XL)

Nokia 7 Plus

Powered by a capable SoC, the Snapdragon 660 (which is no slouch compared to the 800 series processors) which contains 8 Kryo cores (4x2.2 GHz Kryo 260 and 4x1.8 GHz Kryo 260).

Enter The Nokia 7 Plus(GOT intro tune insert HERE 😝) .

Some Basic spec overview :

  • 6 inch IPS LCD display, 18:9 aspect ratio (Pixel 2 XL-esque)
  • Oreo 8.1
  • SD 660, Adreno 512 GPU (About SD660, go here)
  • 4GB RAM
  • 64 GB Storage
  • Carl Zeiss optics,Primary Dual Camera with 12 MP (f/1.75, 1.4µm) and 12 MP (f/2.6, 1.0µm) and Secondary Camera with 16 MP (f/2.0, 1.0µm)
  • Black/Copper, White/Copper Color variants

The Pros:

  • Clean stock experience(which most/many users like/prefer) and future-proofing thanks to Android One support
  • Beast SoC
  • OZO audio with 3 mics
  • Micro-SD card slot (pro for some users)
  • The return of Carl Zeiss optics (+the beloved Nokia lumia-esque camera app and its manual mode)
  • A relatively beefy battery(3800 mAh)
  • The Price €399/₹25,999(I find the price apt, given the pros over-weigh cons)

The Cons:

  • Although pixel-esque(The pixel has an OLED panel) but with an LCD Display(which is pretty good)
  • No waterproofing
  • No OIS (a con for some)
  • The MAJOR drawback I have with the device is Lack of Bootloader Unlock support which hinders most of the development on XDA (Although its launch with Oreo 8.1 guarantees Project Treble, But the lack of  bootloader unlock tool by HMD Global is a major setback. I hope this changes in near future.)

Longevity of the device:

As it runs on android one platform it is safe to say it will have 2-3 years of Official support and will get the latest android update (Hopefully, within months of pixel update)
The SoC (SD660) is a beast of a processor so lags won't be an issue thanks to clean android and is likely to run future Android versions smoothly.
Nokia has impressed us with regular/monthly security updates in past year.
Therefore, the device has been rightly dubbed as the Budget-Pixel XL(Thanks to pixel-esque looks and android one).

Conclusion/Mop-Up:

Is this phone the phone nokia fans/enthusiasts were hoping for?
How will it hold up against the inevitable release of OnePlus 6(Although a few bucks expensive, But you get flagship specs.)?
Does it dent Oppo/Vivo market(which comes with inferior SoC,But with nice warranty options and service center availability everywhere.)?
Only time will tell.
All in all I love this phone. Great looks, clean stock android experience, good pricing, what else can I ask.

Thats all folks. My two cents. Good Luck 😁.
I want to keep my blogs short and simple, and not confuse readers with big terms.

  1. Good overview buddy. That said, I wouldn't agree with OPPO/Vivo service. They might have decent sales channel, but their service is still lower than what one should expect. Nokia might be able able to deliver better on this since they have a lot of service centers already.
The bootloader unlock also probably doesn't bother any general user of the phone, except for those few who want to take it to another level. Plus, I see them more needed on smartphones running junk ROMs which people often wanna get rid of. Stock Android is already wonderful in itself. My only wish is that HMD customizes it like Oxygen OS.

    1. Thank you. I have never owned an OPPO/Vivo phone(nor I intend to tbh). My friend had one and he got 2 year Accidental damage protection with it. I get your point about the after sales support being poor.
I too wish they offer a bit of customization on top of stock OS (though highly unlikely)
If they allow bootloader unlock support that problem will be solved.
Again Thank you for your comment/appreciation of the post. :)
I wish you enjoy reading. More stuff coming next week. Happy reading.
      Peace.
